Product Reviews: The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Fun book for parents-to-be Comments: We are having a little girl in October and purchased this book before we went away on vacation to help us select a name. Although this book does not have a sea of names like many of the 100,000+ name books out there, there is a wide-range of names to choose from. I like the methodology behind the book and it makes it much easier and more fun than reading through lists and lists of names. What is also fun, is that we can take names that we like however may not want to use and look them up in the book and see other similar name suggestions. I definitely endorse this book!! |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Awesome Book, not traditional Comments: I do not know about you however I loose interest and attention span looking through baby name books that just list names from A-Z. I purchased another book that was this way and we got to D before we just couldn't read anymore, however this book is totally different. It gives you names and then tells you what nicknames could be, variations, how popular they were when and how they are today, suggests sisters and brothers names, which I loved!! and then they describe the name, however not like this name means broken river, like it describes it's history and why people pick it. And then after it does that there are sections in the back that show names by type, such as greek, antique charm and so on. Overall great book, reason I gave it4stars is I would have liked there to be a few more names to choose from, it is great, do not get my wrong, however it's not as thorough as some books with how many names it offers. however overall would endorse this book to eone!! |
Rating: 1 (out of 5) Summary: Missing TONS of pages Comments: I ordered this book from a great Will in San Francisco, and they wrote that book was in great condition, no pages missing, however when I got the book boy names J through P were missing. I am having a boy, so that added to my frustration. The book itself, the pages I got, is great. I will have to go purchase another one:( |
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Summary: Fun, Witty, Fresh Comments: almost all baby name books are run-of-the-mill A-to-Z lists with the meanings and origins for tens of thousands of names. And yet you look through the page after page nothing jumps out. It's too overwhelming, and meaning alone doesn't give you much context for how the name stands up in the real world. Baby Name Wizard is a fresh take on the concept of picking a name. Each brief entry lists nicknames, variants, styles, compatible sibling names and a chart of popularity over time, all topped with a witty and relevant note about how the name is perceived in today's world. It lists all the usual classics however really shines with unique names that aren't too out there, names rooted in tradition however with a modern sound and feel. My favorite line in the book is under the list of 70s & 80s names: "Ah, thanks for stopping by. It gets mighty lonely in this section of the book. You do not meet many parents seeking names to bring back memories of Charlie's Angels and the A-Team." That kind of perspective gives me more confidence in this book than the massive 100,000-name books that pretend Sunngifu and Chlodochar are legitimate options. |
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Summary: great book Comments: I love how this book lists popularity trend charts for each name. TONS of names are analyzed here. |
