Product Reviews: Suncast DB5000 Deck Box, 50-gallon |
Rating: 3 (out of 5) Summary: Pushing the limit Comments: This deck box seems to about push the limit of the Suncast design. It assembled easily, and it holds a ton of outdoor toys, however I am glad I did not go1size larger as the integrity/sturdiness appears to suffer the larger the container. I read the reviews of the larger boxes and opted for this one. So far I have not had issues with the wind blowing the lid open/off, or the box falling apart. I do believe the best use for this is for large, light, cumbersome items. I use it for big plastic trucks, t-ball bats and balls, badminton racquets et al, and bubbles/water guns. I would not load it down with heavy garden staples like sand, lime or soil. The kids can get in and out of it and I do not worry about the lid slamming on them because you pretty much have to hold it to keep it open and it's pretty light. |
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Summary: Finally!! Comments: Finally, a deck box that keep its contents dry!! We're an older couple and have no need for a larger box than this one. It contains covers for our2deck chairs and other items we use on our deck (radio, coasters, etc.). It will comfortably hold the cushions for our2chairs when winter comes. This is the third deck box I have purchased and each leaked however not this one.
I had no trouble at all putting it together in about 5 minutes when it arrived. Nice part was I needed no tools to do it. I highly endorse this deck box to all who do not need a larger one. |
Rating: 1 (out of 5) Summary: product came damaged Comments: The product came damaged, a corner of the top was broken off. We glued it back into place because this was easier than dealing with return shipping. It functions okay, however would like a lot better without the 're-attached look'.

Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Roomy chest Comments: This thing has plenty of room in it. We transferred all of Mrs. Spudman's birding supplies into the new facilities. In the box now are two, short metal trash cans with lids.225 pound bags of seed. Several of those large, popcorn tins, that now hold birdseed. And a whole miscellany of feeders of various sizes.
The size and depth of the box can makeit difficult to reach things on the bottom of the box. I built and installed a free-standing shelf, about a foot high, on1side of the box for placement of small items and easy access. The built in lid storage tray is wonderful and even has an indentation in the middle to make it easier to open. It is divided into3compartments in which Mrs. Spudman keeps things like gloves, clippers, hooks, and bird treats. The tray's lid doesn't always close smoothly, and needs a little extra encouragement. Not closing this compartment snugly means all of its contents could fly out when the large lid is raised.
almost all people will place their deck boxes on a deck, porch, or patio. That wouldn't work in our situation since the box contains birdseed for the feeders and a deck placement would require too many trips up and down the steps. Instead I made an elevated platform using cinderblocks and 2 by 4s on which to situate the new box. Its raised position enables Mrs. Spud easier access to the contents, and its ground location eliminates all those trips up the steps.
Finally
This box suits and will suit our purposes perfectly. We like its size and the extra storage in the lid. Those who do not need a box of this size and favor mobility may want to shop for a box equipped with wheels and handles. Our box is stationary. I wouldn't want to struggle with moving this thing. As more stuff has found its way inside the box, the steadiness and stability of the box has actually improved.

Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: great box, great value. Comments: I do not think this can be beat for the price. It is HUGE, can hold alalmost all anything, including our 6 folding deck chairs, with room to spare. It keeps out the water, has holes to add your own latch or lock, and was an absolute breeze to assemble (3 minutes, tops). It stays together when moving from place to place (even if full). It appears OK, given that it's a plastic monstrosity. The color is neutral enough to blend in with just about anything.
I only detract1star because of a few things that would improve it greatly -- it could use some wheels, or at least handles or imprints so it could be gripped/moved with much more ease. It is sturdy enough to sit on (even my 250+ pound friend had no problem sitting on it), so if they had simply molded the lid in a seat shape, this would have had far more function.
As a side note: Do not pay the inflated shipping charge, it is not worth that. You can find it locally at Ace or Sears for a lot less, especially during a sale (like the current Memorial Day sale).
Overall: great product, I am glad I chose it. |
