Product Reviews: Epson Perfection 1660 Photo Scanner |
Rating: 3 (out of 5) Summary: OK Scanner for almost all work... Comments: This scanner produces fair results for almost all work. There is a major flaw in the design that prospective purchaseers should know. The assumption is that when scanning negatives, there will be a difference in density between the edge of the frame and the inter-frame space. This is usually, however not always the case. I have a large project involving photographing small items against a black background. I carefully exposed so that the black background produces no density on the negative. This allows the maximum dynamic range for the object I am photographing. This scanner refuses to scan the entire strip. I get nothing. If you need a scanner for negatives, this is probably not the1to get. |
Rating: 1 (out of 5) Summary: THIS SCANNER IS NOW WORTHLESS Comments: Worked fine when 1st installed. Lost hard drive and now ubable to re-install. Have done extensive and time consuming research on the problem to no avail. Have un-installed and re-installed several times, following the instructions carefully. Keep getting the same error message when trying to open the so called "Smart Panel". ......
"APPLICATION FAILED TO INSTALL BECAUSE: ISM.DLL WAS NOT FOUND. REINSTALLING ALLPICATION MAY FIX THIS PROBLEM"
Well this did not fix the problem and I now have an expensive EPSON PERFECTION 1160 PHOTO scanner whih is useless. No help from online support. |
Rating: 1 (out of 5) Summary: do not purchase this scanner. Comments: I had the scanner for maybe a year. I did not use it much. Without any reason it stopped working properly. All the images I scan are blurry with blue and red all over. Terrible!!!!!!

Rating: 1 (out of 5) Summary: Remorseful purchaseer here!! Comments: purchased the so-called Mac compatible scanner last year and it worked with OS 9. I went to do this years batch of scans using OS X and no go. Image Capture doesn't see it connected via USB. An Apple Support document indicates that the 1660 Photo driver is NOT abuilt in driver in Mac OS X. I downloaded almost all the recent software (epson11208.sea) from Epson website, installed it...the scanner app will not even startup!! |
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Summary: Great, especially for the price Comments: 1st of all, I have a Mac, so that plays into any computer equipment purchases. You'd be surprised how many peripherals still do not work with Macs. That said, Epson has always had excellent Mac support. They supply updated drivers soon after Apple releases new versions of OS X. This is definitely not true of other scanner manufacturers (like Microtek).
Anyway, this is a great scanner. It offers plenty of resolution (1600 dpi optical) and does a great job with slides and negatives. Slides scanned at 1600 dpi come out with slightly more resolution than a two-megapixel digital camera. If you need more detail than that, you'd be better off purchaseing a dedicated film scanner. however for the price this1does an excellent job.
I really like Epson's TWAIN software. it has3levels of complexity: Home, Office, and Professional. The 1st2give simple options and make all the choices for you. Professional supplies a surprising amount of control and dispenses with all of the assistants and helpers (which I find maddening). |
