Product Reviews: Linksys Wireless-B Music System WMLS11B |
Rating: 3 (out of 5) Summary: Requires sophistication to setup if you try to follow all instructions Comments: This Linksys internet radio software comes with both MusicMatch and also Rhapsody. You should not run both at the same time, because MusicMatch is always bugging you, because the Rhapsody server is also running. (You must run either Rhapsody or MusicMatch, because you want a server process running on the PC while you are using the Linksys.) Linksys was designed by Cisco Net, who know their stuff, however they do not realize nor did the author of the manuals, understand that almost all users are not sufficiently sophisticated re network technical details. So, until Cisco updates their design and also rewrites the instructions and also implements a more user-friendly user-interface, perhaps a graphical interface, I cannot endorse this Linksys product for almost all users. Also, all the cables that have to hang around the back are clumsy. There should be a back panel to cover up almost all cables, into which there should be room to stuff the cables, which interconnect the speakers etc. |
Rating: 3 (out of 5) Summary: It is old technology however... Comments: It does the work well... You might need to purchase subscription for full blown functionality. Other then that, make sure your internet radio stations broadcasts MP3 compatible format as this device can not handle anything else - to my big disappointment. Unfortunately alalmost all all of my radios runs ACC format. however it is only my fault, I should read user manual 1st... Also, it is unclear how to run Rhapsody on this unit w/o PC on the background

Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Great for what it is Comments: If1takes the time to do a little research on this product and upgrade the firmware you would find this a great radio for the money. I purchased 3 units and have them scattered around the house, hooked into my wireless network. I am happy with them, they do what I desired which is to listen to internet radio. No problems updating the firmware, no problems getting them onto my wireless network. I am happy with the sound of the speakers, I have1unit hooked into my stereo system1day I'll probably purchase1of those $300+ units out there however for now I have more internet radio stations that I need |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Nice device, however only after fiddling around. Comments: This product depends upon a media server application. The installation CD comes with MusicMatch Jukebox, which doesn't work anymore since MusicMatch is out of business. You can use other media servers (Microsoft Media Player, for instance), and it somewhat works. If the reason you purchased this, however, is for internet radio, Media Player doesn't help. Your best bet is to go to www.linksysradio.com, download their replacement firmware, and use their Super Internet Radio Tuning Service. It updates the station list on the device and let's you tune in to stations without having to use a separate computer to run a media server. You can still use something like Microsoft Media Player if you wprefer to access music that resides on your computer.
In summary, (a) do not bother trying to get the out-of-the-box software to work, (b) use www.linksysradio.com (run by vTuner) to upgrade the firmware, (c) purchase Super Internet Radio Tuning Service ($20-30) from vTuner if you want internet radio, (d) use Windows Media Player if you want to play stuff that's already on your computer.
You can find new units for $25-30 if you look around. If that's what you will pay, it is worth having. On the other hand, if you have to pay $100 for the unit, I wouldn't endorse it.
