D-Link DWL-G700AP Wireless Access Point, 802.11g, 54Mbps
Rating: 1 (out of 5)
Summary: limited usage
Comments: This product seems to function ONLY as a Wireless Access Point. That is to say, it can take your wired system to wireless. This can NOT act as a bridge, nor, I suspect a repeater. Caveat emptor!!
Rating: 3 (out of 5)
Summary: Complex configuration, works afterwards
Comments: I have many D-LINK products (router, switches) and so went with this access point. D-Link products have been straightforward to configure and use, however not this one.

I did not want to change the addresses on the hardwired network at home so I hooked this access point up to a laptop directly, just a lan cable between the laptop and the access point, nothing else connected. You have to change the IP address of the laptop to do this. Google on another computer to see how to do this. Set the static IP address on the laptop to be1number higher than the default access point IP address (in the rightalmost all portion of the IP address). MS Internet Explorer 7 on my windows laptop (XP SP2) was what I tried to use 1st. IE constantly complained about not being connected and kept taking itself offline. I was not able to make progress at all. Switched over to using Safari browser on windows laptop. Now I could log in to the access point and start configuration. Ran through the configuration wizard, however it did not seem to work. Went to manual mode, made multiple changes on each page, and then clicked on the "apply" howeverton. This always generated an error message and did not make the changes on the page. After some experimentation, found that I could change1parameter and then hit apply, and the changes would be made. Took a while to find that this worked consistently, and slow progress to configure this1change at a time, however once I found this approach, got the thing configured and installed. In the configuration I had, I was connecting to a wired network with a router. Configured the "LAN" to automatically get an IP address, and configured the WAN to have DHCP off. Ething seems to work now.

Summary: Works better than their 802.11g Wireless Repeater
Comments: We had been using the D-Link Wireless Repeater in conjunction with the D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router. The router has always worked fine. The repeater would work for a few minutes, or maybe a few hours, or maybe all day. however then, inevitably, it would have to be power-cycled because the wireless PC would no longer be able to connect to it. The signal from repeater to PC would always be great ... you just could not get to the Internet. On the advice of a seasoned IT pro, I replaced the repeater with this Access Point. It came up working from the beginning and has not failed in3weeks of daily use.

Summary: This product is poorly designed, and DLINK Tech Support is TERRIBLE
Comments: 1st, I am not a novice in setting up networks at home. My home is completely wired and have generally never had trouble in the setup or operation of it. It is also all based on DLink products up until now (which is going to change).

The fundamentally poor design is that this comes out of the box with a static IP of 192.168.0.50. That means you can not change it, until you log into the device using another device with an address in the same range. At home, my entire network...and computers..are all on a different network. That means in order to even get the thing to work, I have to remove1of my computers from my network, adjust some advanced network settings, and hook it directly to the access point. And all of my computers are neat and tidy..who wants to do this?

I got the login to work the 1st time (after having spend 1 hour with Tech support) however have not been able to get it to work with my network. It's a piece of crap. And DLinks tech support is terrible. The gal on the phone did not even understand networking basics.

Summary: Works as Advertised
Comments: This is a nice, simple WAP that works as advertised. The web-based set up was easy to implement. great performance for a reasonable price.
