Sony DVP-NC85H/B HDMI/CD Progressive Scan 5-Disc DVD Changer, Black
Rating: 1 (out of 5)
Summary: Stay away from Sony!!!!!!!!!!
Comments: I purchased this DVD changer in October '07 and by July '08 it has started to die as described in other reviews. It takes forever to change chapters, it will not play legitimate disks I have recorded from tv, and it even refuses to play some store purchased concert DVDs dropping back to the menu after a5minute stall. I refuse to have another Sony product in my home from this day on. There was a time Sony meant quality, however this is a heap of excrement!! Add to that what Sony has done to people's computers with their copy protection malwear, I would say they are the lowest form of business out there and should be avoided at all costs!!

Summary: Great Features, however a Few Things I do not Like...
Comments: I have had this unit for just about2months now. Video is fine from the DVDs. I am not quite the A/V connoisseur as some reviewers are - I am significan notly less discriminating. however it appears as great to me as any I have seen. I do not generally use it for anything else - just watching DVDs, though it does claim to play a lot of other types of disk. The things that I dislike about this DVD player are as follows:

1) The unit is slow. Powering on, and especially when starting any DVD. It says "loading..." for much longer than any other DVD player I have used. Perhaps this is required in a unit that plays high quality, however to me it is just annoying. Some DVDs take 30 seconds or more just to load and show anything at all. Too long in my opinion!!

2) Another reviewer mentioned how difficult it is to see the numbers of the slots when the tray is open - and that's an understatement!! Maybe it is these "old eyes" of mine, however where my entertainment center is there is no direct light shining down, and I can not tell what number is next to the slots in the tray without shining a pocket flashlight on it. No exaggeration - that is the truth!! Also each slot number is between2slots and I have mistaken which slot I used on more than1occasion.

3) The remote control is terrible. I mean really bad!! Thin and light, I will give it credit for at least having all the necessary howevertons in logical places in the remote. (The Panasonic HT-830 I just trashed had the absolute worst layout for a remote I have ever seen. NO Open/close Tray howeverton on top, however instead it was listed in the middle of its 100+ howevertons and required a SHIFT press!!). The Sony remote for this player for some reason requires that I press e howeverton twice. Changed batteries 3 times and I am only 7 feet away, however it literally takes2presses for each howeverton. Also it is not universal - can not control any other device.

While this is certainly a great player as far as the "neat" features it has - especially being able to swap out DVDs with the tray open WHILE you are watching another DVD - that's a killer feature that I love called Exchange!! however the not-so-great remote and the excruciatingly SLOW loading times costs it 2 stars, and give this player a grand total of 3 stars.

For the price, though, it is a great deal.

Summary: Great all around player for Audio and Video
Comments: I purchased this player for2reasons. If you enjoy music, having to constantly feed a CD tray becomes a little irritating. do not overlook the convenience of a multi-disk player. Just load it up and it plays for hours. I also wanted a player that would upsample standard DVDs to my 1080p television. This feature works flawlessly. On almost all movies from 8-10 feet away it is hard to tell the difference from the output of my Sony Blu-Ray player I purchased afterwards (I hate to admit this, however it's true). I have had no malfunctions with this player. The only thing that bothers me is the build of the CD tray itself. It seems a little flimsy, however the general build of the player is solid and the case is actually metal. I am pleased with this product.

Summary: No multi disc shuffle
Comments: I purchased this player to replace my old 5 cd carousel changer. For me it was a bonus feature to have DVD playback. Sony's priority is the DVD playback, not CDs. My favorite function on my old component was the "all disc shuffle" function, which was also a howeverton on the component (no TV needed for the display). This1can only shuffle within1disc, however I do not see the point in that. I also do not like where the remote sensor is because I have to leave the door open to my entertainment center to use the remote. This defeats the purpose of a closed door that keeps little hands away from the equipment and media.

Summary: Poor quality and poor repair experience
Comments: I purchased this as part of a home theater system. I am not an audiophile and do not watch TV, just a movie or2each week. I like the 5 disc carousel because it allows me to play about a week's worth of Christmas music from MP3s burned to discs. My old CD carousel will not do MP3s.

The remote did not work out of the box. Many functions are only available on the remote, so this isn't exactly a minor problem. I sent it back immediately.

In return for my brand new DVD player, Sony sent me a "factory refurbished" unit...no other options. Now I 1st got a "factory refurbished" something back in the 1970s. That1was obviously broken before it was packaged for resale. I have NEVER had a "factory refurbished" unit that worked properly, and this DVD player was no exception.

The used1they sent me worked about as badly as the new one. My ancient Panasonic was working fine, so I just hooked up the Sony to play said MP3s at Christmas. I eventually learned that the Panasonic does not like DVD-Rs well, so I sent the Sony back for repair a second time. It came in2weeks ago. Absolutely no difference.

I called Sony and they said they would send me a shipping label (it had cost me over $40 so far to ship a unit that is retailing today for $110). A week later I called Sony and the guy said he would e-mail the shipping label "right now." I called back the next day, was put on hold, and then disconnected. When I finally got through, I would not let the guy off the phone until the label hit my e-mail inbox.

I will wait for the unit to be returned (Sony's turnaround is quite great) and see if it works. I will not bother with it any more if it doesn't -- just not worth it. however I will certainly never purchase another Sony product.

Oh, by the way: the "universal remote" that came with the home theater system? It's defective, too. Operates the tuner/amp however cannot be programmed to operate anything else.
