Product Reviews: Makita 5007MG 15 Amp 7-1/4-Inch Magnesium Circular Saw |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Great Saw; Now Work on the Accessories Comments: As a precision-oriented professional home-remodeler, I finally got fed-up with the DeWalt 364 I had been using for the past 14 years. It is a rugged saw, to be sure, however I could never get it aligned properly, so ripping with the fence has always been an adventure. I finally gave up and just started ripping ething free-hand. Also, the blade would deflect terribly when ripping along a bevel. ANYWAY, I purchased this Makita 5007MG and LOVE the saw. It's lighter, well-balanced for me, and cuts incredibly accurately. The rubber grips ewhere are appreciated. The bevel lever and pre-set stops are great. Even the depth-of-cut guide is quite accurate. The led lights are a great bonus and are effective even in total darkness. Oddly, they are on whenever the saw is plugged in, though led's do have a long life, so this may be of little concern. All in all this saw is a pleasure to use, particularly for me as a left-hander-- easy to see the line-of-cut. I am not sure why the complaint from another lefty in another review.
Where this package falls short is in the case, the rip guide, and the cord. The case is the same old generic case Makita has been using for all its sidewinders for years. The saw barely fits, and there is virtually no room for blade storage--2 blades max. I like to have beater blades, new blades, masonry blades, finish blades all in the case. As for the rip fence, it's pretty minimal. The arm is so short that its max rip is a measly 7 or 8 inches. Also, the almost all you can rip to the right of the blade is 3", and the least you can rip to the left is 3 5/8". The range in between is missing altogether. The hook which allows the fence to slide in under the saw's sole plate should be bent slightly longer to allow you to shove it all the way over, tighten the nut, and rip an accurate 3 1/2"--handy for plywood filler strips for 2x4 framing. Lastly, even though the saw is double-insulated and doesn't require a three-prong cord, it should have one. Even if the ground prong is a dummy prong, it sure helps any tool stay plugged into an extension cord. Hopefully, Makita will figure this stuff out. I should send these comments to the company. purchase the saw anyway. It's a great one. |
Rating: 5 (out of 5) Summary: pleased Comments: This Makita replaced a 20 year old Craftsman circular saw that had developed a bent arbor. I was impressed right out of the box. The depth and angle movements were smooth and easy to adjust. The magnesium base slides nicely on the building material. Saw is a great weight - not tiresomely heavy, not cheap-y light.
I thought the LED light at the cutline was a gimmick and wouldn't be worth much - however let me tell you, in the fading light of day when I was trying to get those last pieces of siding cut and installed, that light was a fantastic bit of engineering!!
I am pleased and would endorse this saw. |
Rating: 2 (out of 5) Summary: Check the alignment. Comments: I checked this saw out at the local big box store and it seemed well made. The floor model was made in Japan so I purchased it. When I got it home I checked the alignment of the blade and it was out by about 3/32 front to back. Also this1was made in China. I brought it back in favor of the Milwaukee. Other than that it seemed like a nice saw. |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Great saw if you are Right Handed Comments: My husband has been in construction for ages, he's a carpenter and we have recently started a construction company. He needed a few new tools for the hotel he's currently building so this saw was1of a few purchases we made from Amazon.
The saw works wonderfully, and cuts exactly what it is supposed to cut, I WOULD give this saw 5 stars, if either my husband or myself were right handed (not that I plan on using it much). The problem for those of us who are lefties is that the blower blows the sawdust directly into your face, no getting around it. We've basically handed this saw off to our right handed saw guy to use. I am sure that somewhere out there Makita makes a left handed version, however in the meantime we're out shopping for a different saw.
If you are right handed, this is an excellent saw for the money and has held up well for both a school remodel and building a 4 story hotel so far. Just beware if you are left handed that you should try to either find a left handed model, or get a different saw.
Another random note - If you order from amazon, you will have to have a person at home to sign for the deli. It wasn't a problem for us, however you should know since amazon doesn't have that listed anywhere. |
Rating: 4 (out of 5) Summary: Second Makita saw Comments: This is the second Makita circular saw I have purchased. The 1st1is still going strong after 12 years. This saw is lighter and easier to use than its predecessor with great power. Only issue I have is that all the circular saws I have used seem to blow the sawdust all over you and this1is no exception. Other than that, great saw for the money. |
