    Product Description:

Cisco Small Business Smart Switches deliver cost-effective switching solutions that are ideal for small businesses or workgroups within larger organizations. These high-speed switches offer entry-level management without the cost and complexity of a full Layer 2 managed switch. The Cisco SLM2008 8-Port Gigabit Smart Switch is ideal for conference rooms, labs, shipping/receiving departments or in marketing, design, or audio/visual workgroups. The810/100/1000-Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet) ports enable companies to link to other Gigabit devices on the network (servers, workstations, and network storage) to quickly move bandwidth-intensive files while still supporting 10/100-Mbps clients. The Cisco SLM2008 supports the IEEE 802.3af standard for Power over Ethernet (PoE) for obtaining its power over a designated powered device (PD) switch port or from an external AC power adapter. This gives companies the option to install the switch in places where a power outlet may not be present, such as in ceilings and walls. The Cisco SLM2008 is able to secure the network through IEEE 802.1Q VLANs and IEEE 802.1X port authentication. For environments where IP multicast applications are used, the switch is capable of limiting the traffic to only the ports that have requested that traffic, with support of Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping. Additional quality-of-service (QoS) capabilities, such as IEEE 802.1p, differentiated services code point (DSCP), and4hardware queues, make it possible to maintain great quality for real-time applications such as voice and video. The Cisco SLM2008 offers an easy-to-use browser interface for managing and configuring the features, making it ideal for small businesses without an IT staff or that have minimal technical expertise.

Switch 8-PORT Gig Smart with pd
I used this switch for alalmost all 1 year. It carried light traffic. I noticed it always ran hot. 1day I decided to fry an egg on it. Worked great (I thought this was a switch for data!!?) I powered on my computers1morning and nothing worked. I checked and the switch was on however none of the LEDs were lit, besides the Sys. Sound familiar? Read the other reviews, they all have the same problem. Tells me something.

I called Linksys (Cisco) today and they require me to pay shipping to return it to them - no way around it. WOW - only in America can you produce crapola like this and make the consumer pay to return it to you for replacement. Maybe I should consider myself lucky that I can get a replacement. Maybe that is why they give it a 5 year warranty. Maybe they made an extra few runs these switches to cover the returns.

I would not endorse this switch. If you do not believe me, see the other reviews - there are many with EXACTLY the same problem.

    purchaseer BEWARE!!

    Summary: Linksys slm2008 dead after1year
    Rating: 2 out of 5   Date: 2009-01-01
The Linksys SLM2008 has great features for it's price. I like the VLAN feature which I used to put my gamer son on a different subnet..

Alas, the unit died after a little over1year. The power light comes on, however that's it. None of the ports work.

Based upon my experience, I would not purchase this switch again.

Summary: These fail repeatedly. Linksys not helpful after several replacements.
    Rating: 1 out of 5   Date: 2008-12-01
We purchased over a dozen of these for use as desktop switches at our company. Both the SLM2005 and SLM2008 models. They all begin to fail at approximately the same time and within a week all are dead. At 1st Linksys was happy to replace them. However, after about the fourth round of replacements, they are now giving us the run-around and asking for more details about the failures before they can be replaced. My response, "They just do not work!!" Seriously. You can no longer reach them on the assigned or default IP address, nothing connects on any of the ports. It matters not whether they are powered by AC or PoE.
    Steer clear of these doorstops.

Summary: Judging from reviews, reliability is not its strong point
    Rating: 3 out of 5   Date: 2008-08-01
My switch failed after 6 months of light usage. I had it installed in a Leviton wiring cabinet, the kind that fits into a wall.

Linksys product support was helpful and readily agreed to replace it without a lot of questioning. Fortunately, it has a 5 year warranty.

Summary: 2 units failed due to overheating
    Rating: 1 out of 5   Date: 2008-07-10
I purchased 4 of these for use as "loaner" switches at the company I work for. I have had2of them fail from overheating after 2-4 months of use, they just stop working, and were hot to the touch. Definitely appears like a design problem, and I would highly discourage anyone from purchasing1of these.
