Never pass the time with "a little solitaire"
by obsesed4mozart, Feb 22, 2006
Pros: Landsbury, Sinatra, Harvey, plot construction, direction, great movie on all sides.
Cons: Other female characters got a little tiring.
The Bottom Line: Just see it: you won't be disappointed.
Review: The trigger word: solitaire. Nobody could have better suited "Mother" then Angela Landsbury. Nothing ...

Who says Mother knows best?
by SKAD13, Jul 8, 2005
Pros: Powerful acting; taut political suspense
Cons: It seems as though self-serving villains have used this movie as a template ever since
The Bottom Line: Classic thriller, more relevant each year
Review: When the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate(1962) was first released, it probably seemed li ...

The Manchurian Candidate - Youll Never Look at a Deck of Cards the Same Way
by AliventiAsylum, Apr 30, 2005
Pros: Angela Landsbury, great story, Sinatra and Harvey acceptable
Cons: other women in the cast used poorly and not enough
The Bottom Line: For a version that doen't give away the whole story up-front, the original is more suspenseful as the story takes it's time rather than showing it's cards up front.
Review: I had never seen the original version of The Manchurian Candidate until just prior to seeing the rem ...

An all time top 10 movie
by heavyreader, Feb 14, 2005
Pros: Keeps you guessing 'till the very end
Cons: Not in this movie
The Bottom Line: This movie is the father of modern movie political thrillers. The plot so resembled the real world that at one point the film was pulled from circulation
Review: It's very hard to appreciate a movie when you view it out of context, that is, when it was first pre ...

The Manchurian Candidate is a Commie Dog
by updateghost, Jul 10, 2004
Pros: Direction, Angela Lansbury and Laurence Harvey.
Cons: Did we really need Janet Leigh, or a word she say?
The Bottom Line: "...this is a good movie right up to the last minute, with creeps and twists that would impress todays constantly-dumbing generation."
Review: I'm one of those people who generally doesn't get around to seeing a classic/oldie until something m ...

Solitaire anyone?
by st_patrick, Sep 10, 2003
Pros: Pointed political commentary
Cons: Am hazy about the Iselin/communist connection, The Janet Leigh character adds little
The Bottom Line: One of the smartest political thrillers ever made.
Review: John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate" is a fascinating Cold War thriller that I've been me ...

Withstands the test of time, and then some
by mathewq, Nov 14, 2002
Pros: still very poignant
Cons: you need to know about 1950s politics to really appreciate it
The Bottom Line: Has a message that's as meaningful today as when it was made - perhaps even more so. Great old-fashioned political thriller that can still stand on its own.
Review: Go ahead, go see this film. And then on your way out, turn to the person next to you and say, " ...

"I Keep Telling You Not To Think" That The Manchurian Candidate Will Follow Conventions
by mfunk75, Sep 21, 2002
Pros: Plays with convention, strong satire, broad but effective performances
Cons: The darn thing tricked me on first viewing!, one shot during the ending
The Bottom Line: Maybe I'm misreading it, but I found The Manchurian Candidate endlessly amusing, once I figured out what it was aiming for.
Review: John Frankenheimer spent the entirety of the 1950s as a well-respected television director, helping ...

The Manchurian Candidate: So Good, It Made Women Societies Truly Look Evil
by lynus, Mar 15, 2002
Pros: Frankenheimer's direction, Angela Lansbury and Laurence Harvey.
Cons: Frank Sinatra's semi-lame acting, action sequence.
The Bottom Line: Could of easily been a Manchurian Mess - but the movie is the best psychological, social, and political thriller to have ever been made.
Review: 1962 political and social thriller brilliantly directed by John Frankenheimer that remains to ...
